Local Men's Network - Blue Mountains

On the 24th of June 2005, OMNI held its AGM at the Redfern Town Hall, Delegates from groups as far away as the Tamworth, Hunter Valley, Riverina and the Blue Mountains gathered together to elect a number of new members to the Central Planning Committee.

Congratulations to local representative Geoff Turner (third from left) on his election to the role of Vice-President and to Steve Larner (photographer) who now has the important role of Publicity for OMNI.

This global event was facilitated by the Springwood Neighbourhood Centre sponsoring a Men's Health Forum at Springwood Bowling Club on Tuesday 21st June 2005. The event was well attended with close to thirty men participating. The discussion was led off by Alf Harris a director of the Neighbourhood Centre.

An insight and thought provoking contribution by Anthony Brown PhD student at UWS prompted some healthy debate on issues concerning men in the community and their personal lives. The lively discussion included personal contributions from educators, community leaders and individuals.

After a light supper, the group was entertained by "the Spooky Mens Chorale" with rousing males reviving an ancient singing tradition.

The Local Mens Group has decided to meet monthly to discussion matters of interest to men in their personal lives and wider community issues raised by the participants. The meetings will be open to men of all ages to encourage diversity of opinions and concerns.

Being a dad is a complex and challenging task. We hope that by talking to other dads that fatherhood can be easier and more meaningful and rewarding for you and your children.

This group is open to dads in all situations - partnered or single, residing with your kids or not. It provides and opportunity for dads to get togeher, as well as provide a source of information and resources.
